Hi Parents, We will begin our third math unit of the year. Please see the attached unit letter to get an idea of what the skills look like and what we'll be working on in this unit.

Hi parents, We will be reviewing this week for our test at the end of the week. Students should be bringing home their notebooks to study from. Please feel free to refer to the Unit 2 letter posted at the beginning of the unit to check again on the skills covered in this unit. Hi Parents,
We will continue practicing division using strategies and get into using multiples to figure out shape patterns. We will also identify number patterns/simple algorithms. We were only able to meet for math two times last week due to ITBS testing, Due to our limited time of our math class meetings last week, we will move the unit test to the week of November 5th. Have a nice week! This week we are continuing to work on two digit by two digit multiplication and practice the different strategies to solve these problems. Students have the strategies in their interactive notebooks. Students will also be introduced to division this week. Students will learn the long division method this week.
Hi parents,
This week we will review prime and composite numbers. We will also be working on multi-digit multiplication this week using different strategies. Please continue to work on multiplication facts at home with your child - even 5 minutes before bed each night is helpful! Hi parents, We are starting our next math unit this week! Please check out the unit letter to get a detailed idea about the skills covered in this unit. Also, please continue to work on multiplication facts at home- it will help a GREAT DEAL with this unit! :) Multiplication.com is a great website that students can use at home to take practice multiplication quizzes on. Sign and returns will be coming home on Thursday. Please review these papers with your child and return them signed the following day. Thank you!
Hi Parents,
This week we will be reviewing and take our unit test at the end of the week. Students will be bringing home their notebooks to help them study. To revisit any skills, please glance at the unit letter from the beginning of our unit that was posted with the weekly news. Hi Parents,
This week we continue to go over skills from previous weeks, including adding/subtracting multi-digit numbers, including subtracting numbers with multiple zeroes. We will review rounding a bit along with solving multi-step word problems. Side note - a skill to practice would be to have your child practice reading a multi-digit number in word form and write it in standard form and vice versa. I've noticed some mistakes being made when practicing this skill. i.e. 7 million, fifty six thousand, twenty three --> 7,056,023 Students will have a quiz on Friday, September 7th. Students have been directed to take home their math notebooks this week each day to study. Hi Parents,
This week we will focusing a bit on rounding to the nearest hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, etc. We will also go over adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers while regrouping as well as subtracting across multi-digit numbers containing values of zero in different place values. This can be tricky with regrouping. We also will connect these standards to word problems. What does our math class look like?
We start the morning with whole group warm-up activities. The bulk of our time is spent with me teaching small group instruction to each math group while the rest of the class is working in rotations. Students will be working in different rotations each day. Rotations include interactive notebook examples, problem solving in their journals, worksheets, games, and interactive activities. All students were given a new account with Prodigy. Unfortunately, we will not have Ten Marks this year as Amazon is doing away with it. All students keep examples of the standards they are working on in their interactive notebooks. They should be bringing these notebooks home for review each week. Students should also be bringing home their agendas and CJ's each day and bringing them back to school each morning. Please check the agenda for homework and initial the agenda when the homework has been completed. Homework will start this week. All homework is due on Friday. We have been working on creating, interpreting, and making comparisons with tally charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs. We will finish up graphs by looking at line plots. Graphs will be studied throughout the year and will appear on most of the unit assessments. This week we will also working on place value through the millions. We will work with base ten blocks and how to write numbers in standard (764,981), extended (700,000 + 60,000 + 4,000+900+80+1) and word forms. (seven hundred sixty four thousand nine hundred eighty one). We will also be learning the difference between value (how much a digit is worth) and place value (where a digit sits in a multi-digit number). Students will also work on understanding that with a multi digit number, a digit in any one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 ÷ 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division. Lastly, we will also be comparing numbers and rounding numbers. |
