Spelling- Sorts 25, 26, 27. Focus on sort 26 this week. The spelling quiz on this unit will be given March 8.
Reading- We are learning the usage of literal vs. non-literal language with figurative language. Students are learning to use similes, metaphors, hyperbole, idioms, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own point of view. Grammar- Students will review subject/verb agreement and learn about pronoun/antecedent agreement. Social Studies – In our current unit on the American Government, students are studying the National, State, and Local Governments, how they are organized, who leads each branch, and the responsibilities of each branch. We have learned what it means to be responsible citizens and why it is so important to respect one another. Upcoming dates and reminders: February 25-March 1 – No lunch visitors this week please! I hope you made some wonderful memories with your kids over the long weekend! Welcome back Mrs. Fletcher! We are so happy to have you back with your third grade team! Spelling- Sorts 25, 26, 27. Focus on sort 25 this week. The spelling quiz on this unit will be given March 8. Reading- This week we will begin studying figurative language. Our focus will be on similes and metaphors this week. An example of a simile is “as big as an elephant.” An example of a metaphor is, “Your brain is a computer.” Students will have a test on Friday on text structures and comparing the themes, plots, settings, and characters of two stories. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own point of view. Grammar-This week we will be reviewing commas and quotation marks in dialogue, comparative and superlative adjectives, and prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Social Studies – We are starting our unit on American Government. In this unit, we will be learning about the National, State, and Local Governments, how they are organized, who leads each branch, and their responsibilities. Upcoming dates and reminders:

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Spelling- Sorts 22, 23, 24. Focus on sort 24 this week. The spelling quiz will be on February 14th. Please note that this is one day earlier than normal due to the holiday on the 15th. Reading- This week, we will continue comparing two stories written by the same author, topic, or characters. The goal is for students to compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of the stories. Students will have a reading test next week on text structures and comparing the themes, plots, settings, and characters of two stories. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are learning to write opinion pieces on topics or texts. Students are learning that opinion writing includes a point of view supported with evidence from the readings. They are learning to introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Students are using linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect their opinion and reasons. They are learning to write a concluding statement or section. Grammar- Students will continue working on prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Science – Students will be completing the science unit on Fossils. There will be an end-of-unit assessment this week. Please have students study the review page and other material glued into their science notebook. Social Studies – Our next unit will be on American Government.
