We will be completing each of our units of study and finalizing grades over the next few weeks in preparation for the 2nd quarter ending and report cards being sent out. There will be no homework this week as we approach the Winter Break. Please remind to students to return their Sign and Return papers they received this past Thursday. Reading- This week, we will review identifying the author’s point of view, text features, and the main idea of nonfiction texts. We will spend some time doing fun Winter activities. Grammar- This week, we will review what we have learned about verb tenses, types of sentences, and reference materials such as the encyclopedia, thesaurus, and the dictionary. Spelling –There will be no spelling this week. Students will receive a new spelling list when they return from Winter Break. Writing- This week, we will continue working on informative writing. Informational writing will include 5 paragraphs: an introduction to the topic, 3 paragraphs explaining the 3 big ideas or subtopics that support their main topic, and a conclusion. Students will also include facts, definitions and transition words in their writing. Science: We will reviewing what we’ve learned this unit about weathering, erosion, rocks, and minerals. Reading- This week, we will review identifying the author’s point of view, text features and the main idea of nonfiction texts. We will also identify our own point of view. Students will not have a homework packet for this week. Students still need to be reading 20 minutes each night and studying for their upcoming tests this week. We will have a reading test on Thursday, December 13th. This kahoot will be a good review for our upcoming test. Kahoot on Main Idea, Point of View and Text Features: 0263118 Grammar- This week, we will review what we have learned about reference materials, including uses of a dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, world wide web or internet, atlas and almanac. Spelling –Students will concentrate on Sort 18 this week. Our spelling quiz on these three sorts will be on Friday, December 14th. Writing- This week, we will continue working on informative writing. Informational writing will include 5 paragraphs: an introduction to the topic, 3 paragraphs explaining the 3 big ideas or subtopics that support their main topic, and a conclusion. Students will explain how water and wind can affect rocks and soil through weathering and erosion. We will also be learning about the different types of soil, their ability to hold water and the size of their grains. We will have a science test on Friday, December 14th. Sign and Returns- Please send back sign and return papers as soon as possible. Thanks Reading- This week, we will continue learning how to identify the author’s point of view of nonfiction texts. We will also identify our own point of view. Homework for this week will be sent home on Monday, December 3rd and due Friday, December 7th. This grammar test will include verb tenses (past: ed to end of words, present: sometimes adds s to the end of words, future: adds will before the verb), irregular verbs, reference materials, and types of sentences. Examples include: declarative- gives a statement (ends in a period) interrogative- asks a question (ends in a question mark) exclamatory- shows a lot of feeling (ends in an exclamation point) imperative- gives a command (ends in a period or exclamation point) Spelling –Students will concentrate on Sort 17 this week.
