Reading – This week we will continue review of our reading standards on finding text evidence to support comprehension, point of view from the narrator and reader, using text evidence to figure out character traits, and how these standards were supported in the read-aloud Because of Winn-Dixie. We will continue working on finding the main idea and supporting details in a story. Students will be working on projects in class to go along with Because of Winn-Dixie. Students will not have a homework packet due to the short week.
Grammar – This week we will be reviewing proper and common nouns, singular and plural nouns, concrete and abstract nouns, and possessive nouns. Students will take their first grammar assessment on Wednesday. The test will cover all of the nouns mentioned above. Spelling –Students will bring home their spelling lists for Words Their Way Sort 10, 11, and 12. We will concentrate on the spelling patterns in Sort 10 the next two weeks. Our spelling quiz on these three sorts will be Monday, October 29. Writing – We are continuing writing personal narratives. Students are learning to write a strong hook to introduce the story, use transition words to connect main ideas in paragraphs, how to add more details to the story, and how to write a conclusion. Social Studies – We have started our unit on Native Americans. We will be learning how the environments of the regions of North America impacted the choices made by Native Americans regarding food, clothing, and shelter. We will be studying the Inuit of the Arctic region, the Kwakiutl of the Northwest region, the Nez Perce of the Plateau region, the Hopi of the Southwest region, the Pawnee of the Plains region, and the Seminole of the Southeastern region.
