Third Grade News – Week of September 10-14, 2018
Reading – This week we will be teaching children to distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or the characters in a literary story. Together we will be reading and discussing several short stories to model and practice this standard. We will continue our read-aloud of the narrative Because of Winn-Dixie. Students are nearing completion of their question packet on each chapter. Upon completion of the story, there will be a test over the entire book to assess listening comprehension. Grammar – We will be reviewing common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, irregular plural nouns, and using the correct form of nouns in our writing. There will be a grammar quiz on these nouns on Friday, September 14. We will be introducing possessive nouns later in the week. Spelling – Students will bring home their spelling lists for Words Their Way Sort 7, 8, and 9. This week we will concentrate on the spelling patterns in Sort 7. Writing – This week we are working on writing narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events. Students will be taught how to write hooks to introduce their stories, descriptive details, and sequencing of events. Social Studies – Map skills will be our focus this week. Students will learn to read and locate lines of longitude and latitude on a world map to include the Equator and Prime Meridian. Students will also learn to locate topographical features on a physical map of the United States. This will include locating the Rocky Mountains and Appalachian Mountains, the Mississippi River, the Ohio River, The Hudson River, the Rio Grande River, the Colorado River, and the St. Lawrence River. Our school-wide expectations include: 1. Respect myself. 2. Respect others. 3. Be 100% accountable. There are guidelines for each of these expectations in the classroom, hallways, bathrooms, playground, and cafeteria. Please talk with your children about meeting these expectations on a daily basis.
