Third Grade News – Week of September 4, 2018
Reading – Students are continuing to read narrative passages to learn about the characters and to identify their character traits through direct evidence and inference. They are also learning how the setting helps to determine the kinds of characters that might be found in a narrative. We are continuing our read-aloud of the narrative Because of Winn-Dixie. Students have taken notes on each chapter. T hey will have a quiz this week, Thursday, September 6th on what has been read to date. This will assess their listening comprehension and ability to gather evidence from a read-aloud. Grammar – We will be working on using irregular plural nouns correctly in our writing. Spelling – Students will have their first spelling quiz on Word Sorts 4, 5, and 6 on Friday, September 7th. They will be assessed on words from all three sorts for a total of 20 words. Later in the year this will increase to 25 words. Writing – We are reading informational articles and using the TEACH method to write a constructive one paragraph response to each article. We will be starting Narrative Writing and brainstorming ideas for writing personal narratives. Science – This week we will be completing our unit on the Regions and Habitats of Plants and Animals of Georgia. There will be a final assessment on Friday, September 7th. One of our school-wide expectations is to be respectful of others. Please remind your children that they are to raise their hands to speak in a whole group and to listen and respect one another’s ideas. Everyone is expected to contribute to whole group discussions. Dates to Remember: September 4-8 – Book Fair Preview September 5 – School Store
