Reading- This week, we will review identifying the author’s point of view, text features and the main idea of nonfiction texts. We will also identify our own point of view. Students will not have a homework packet for this week. Students still need to be reading 20 minutes each night and studying for their upcoming tests this week. We will have a reading test on Thursday, December 13th. This kahoot will be a good review for our upcoming test. Informational writing will include 5 paragraphs: an introduction to the topic, 3 paragraphs explaining the 3 big ideas or subtopics that support their main topic, and a conclusion. Students will also include facts, definitions and transition words in their writing. Science: We will continue our unit on rocks, minerals, erosion, weathering and soil this week. Students will explain how water and wind can affect rocks and soil through weathering and erosion. We will also be learning about the different types of soil, their ability to hold water and the size of their grains. We will have a science test on Friday, December 14th. This grammar test will include verb tenses (past: ed to end of words, present: sometimes adds s to the end of words, future: adds will before the verb), irregular verbs, reference materials, and types of sentences. Examples include: declarative- gives a statement (ends in a period) interrogative- asks a question (ends in a question mark) exclamatory- shows a lot of feeling (ends in an exclamation point) imperative- gives a command (ends in a period or exclamation point) Spelling –Students will concentrate on Sort 17 this week. We will be going over titles, headings, timelines, table of contents, photographs, subheadings, captions, diagrams, labels, charts, tables, maps, bold/highlighted/italic words, textbox/sidebars, bullets, glossaries, and indexes. Students will identify how these text features help them better understand a text. Students should take home their reading interactive notebooks and study the text features that are pasted in them. Students are encouraged to dress in an outfit to represent a storybook character and to bring the book with them to read to a kindergarten class. A student representative from each class will be voted upon for best outfit and the winners will participate in a third grade character parade. The winner for the grade level will receive a prize.

During this unit, students will be learning about 6 different explorers and how they adapted, or failed to adapt to the various physical environments they traveled, as well as their accomplishments, and cooperation and conflict with the Native Americans. Please study the Social Studies interactive notebook with your child each night. There will be a test on each of these explorers on Thursday, November 15th. Grammar – This week we will be reviewing proper and common nouns, singular and plural nouns, concrete and abstract nouns, and possessive nouns. Students will take their first grammar assessment on Wednesday. The test will cover all of the nouns mentioned above. Spelling –Students will bring home their spelling lists for Words Their Way Sort 10, 11, and 12. We will concentrate on the spelling patterns in Sort 10 the next two weeks. Our spelling quiz on these three sorts will be Monday, October 29. Writing – We are continuing writing personal narratives. Students are learning to write a strong hook to introduce the story, use transition words to connect main ideas in paragraphs, how to add more details to the story, and how to write a conclusion. Social Studies – We have started our unit on Native Americans. We will be learning how the environments of the regions of North America impacted the choices made by Native Americans regarding food, clothing, and shelter. We will be studying the Inuit of the Arctic region, the Kwakiutl of the Northwest region, the Nez Perce of the Plateau region, the Hopi of the Southwest region, the Pawnee of the Plains region, and the Seminole of the Southeastern region. Students will be working on a brochure in class about the six regions we have learned about this week. Fall Conferences- It is time for Fall conferences.
