Spelling- Sorts 25, 26, 27. Focus on sort 27 this week. The spelling quiz on this unit will be given March 8th.
Reading- We are learning the usage of literal vs. non-literal language with figurative language. Students are learning to use similes, metaphors, hyperbole, idioms, onomatopoeia, oxymoron, personification and alliteration. This week, we will be looking at songs that use figurative language and determining the meaning of figurative language. This is a great way for our children to see figurative language in something with which they are familiar. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own point of view. Grammar- Students will learn about compound sentences. Compound sentences have two sentences that are joined with a conjunction. Example- I read two books before going to bed, but my grandma read ten books. We will also be introducing coordinating conjunctions. Ex- for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (fanboys). Social Studies- We will be finishing our unit on American Government. Students are studying the National, State, and Local Governments, how they are organized, who leads each branch, and the responsibilities of each branch. We have learned what it means to be responsible citizens and why it is so important to respect one another. We will be completing our unit on Democracy and taking an assessment on Friday, March 8th. Milestones- There are several wonderful resources available to help your child prepare for the Milestones assessment in April. The goal is for students to compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of the stories. Students will have a reading test next week on text structures and comparing the themes, plots, settings, and characters of two stories. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are learning to write opinion pieces on topics or texts. Students are learning that opinion writing includes a point of view supported with evidence from the readings. They are learning to introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Students are using linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect their opinion and reasons. They are learning to write a concluding statement or section. Spelling –We will be focusing on sort 19 this week. Writing- This week, we will continue working on informative writing. Informational writing will include 5 paragraphs: an introduction to the topic, 3 paragraphs explaining the 3 big ideas or subtopics that support their main topic, and a conclusion. Students will also include facts, definitions and transition words in their writing. Social Studies- We are starting our unit on Colonial America. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are looking forward to Winter Break! If your child is going to be absent before or after the winter break, please let me know. We will be completing each of our units of study and finalizing grades over the next few weeks in preparation for the 2nd quarter ending and report cards being sent out. There will be no homework this week as we approach the Winter Break. Please remind to students to return their Sign and Return papers they received this past Thursday. Reading- This week, we will review identifying the author’s point of view, text features, and the main idea of nonfiction texts. We will spend some time doing fun Winter activities. Grammar- This week, we will review what we have learned about verb tenses, types of sentences, and reference materials such as the encyclopedia, thesaurus, and the dictionary. Spelling –There will be no spelling this week. Students will receive a new spelling list when they return from Winter Break. Writing- This week, we will continue working on informative writing.
